Detention Services Officer (DSO) positions hold the status of sworn, peace officers in the Probation Department:
- DSOs supervise the activities of probation youth who are detained in juvenile halls. Incumbents serve as a member of a small team responsible for the order and security of a unit of probation youth, transports minors to medical care facilities and/or courts or other locations, and provides situational counseling, as necessary.
- Maintains order and control of a unit and takes appropriate action in connection with rule infractions or other disturbances.
- Maintains institutional security and takes appropriate action when necessary

Minimum Requirements: Completion of 60 semester (or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college, including coursework in a social or behavioral science field.

Group Supervisor, Nights (GSN) positions hold the status of sworn, peace officers in the Probation Department:
- Ensures order and security during normal nighttime sleeping hours in a facility maintained for the custody, care, treatment, or rehabilitation of probation youth.
- Makes periodic rounds of the living unit to verify the presence of all probation youth assigned and to guard against problems.
- Takes appropriate action to prevent conflicts, rule infractions, or other disturbances and observes and records the behavior and actions of individual probation youth and comforts or disciplines as necessary.
- Inspects bedding to prevent misuse and ensure safety, and monitor ventilation and heating levels in the living unit to maintain a comfortable environment.
- Ensures that injured or ill probation youth obtain nursing or medical attention.

About LACP
The Los Angeles County Probation Department (LACP) is the largest probation services agency in the United States, with about 4,500 employees, two-thirds of whom are sworn officers. We have numerous LA County located Halls and Camps to serve youths who are currently on probation and supervise adult probationers and state adult parolees in the CA Prison Realignment Plan (AB 109) throughout offices in LA County.
We focus on public education and awareness to foster a good understanding of Department operations through proactive communication and engagement linkages. The LACP’s objective is to develop an environment within the County where communities can participate in our efforts to rebuild lives and sustain healthy families.
The LACP has worked to build a foundation of trust with community groups, stakeholders, and agencies to carry out the mission of the Department to operate sustainable and ongoing public safety initiatives for youth and adult probation services in the County.
